My Flexwing Sim reacts to the steering pedals whilst in the Air. How can I stop it?
The control authority of my 3-axis rudder should be different in-flight or on the ground. How do I achieve this?
Ground Steering (Tiller) Before doing anything check that Auto Rudder is not set.
To Change this in FS2004/FSX Aircraft>Realism settings>Flight Controls>AutoRudder and un tick.
  • Rudder and Tiller Separate controls
  • Fs2004 and FSX have very poor support for this. In fact most Microsoft Aircraft used Linked controls even if the "real" aircraft do not. In most of the airliner simulations the rudder moves when the tiller is operated. Contrary to the real aircraft.
  • Rudder and Tiller Linked controls
  • Rudder control authority in-flight and on the ground should be different. If your favourite microlight sim does not do this correctly, Then to achieve this one should switch between two joystick sensors depending on whether in-flight or on the ground. See Circuit A. Suitable Software and Hardware are available from this site or others.

    Circuit A approx 50% reduction

  • Rudder Only (most 3-Axis microlights)
  • Rudder control authority in-flight and on the ground should be different. To achieve this one should switch between two joystick sensors depending on whether in-flight or on the ground. See Circuit A above. Suitable Software and Hardware are available from this site or others.

  • Tiller Only (most flexwing microlights)
  • Rudder control caused by the front steering wheel (tiller) in-flight is minimal. So since the steering wheel is linked to the rudder to give ground steering it should be effectively disconnected in flight. To achieve this one should switch between two joystick sensors depending on whether in-flight or on the ground. See Circuit B or C. Suitable Software and Hardware are available from this site or others.

    Circuit B approx 90% reduction

Circuit C No effect in flight

In Circuit A and B the rudder potentiometers need to be linked, or twin gang pots used.
In Circuit C only 1 potentiometer is required.

The in-flight relay is powered by your sim hardware/software

My Sim does not simulate the twin Magneto action on engine RPM. Can I make it do so?
Some aircraft models do not do simulate twin magnetos well.
To overcome this two DPST switches can be wired to insert a small resistance into the throttle to drop the engine RPM
See Circuit D. This modification does not need any special software or Hardware.

Circuit D approx 10% reduction in RPM

In a teaching envoirnment Circuit E below can be used, to allow the Instructor to simulate stuck magneto switches

My Flexwing Sim steers with wing roll (FS2004). How can I stop it?
Most likely cause is that you are flying with Auto Rudder set.
To Change this in FS2004 Aircraft>Realism settings>Flight Controls>AutoRudder un tick.
